25Hours Hotel - Firenze
A project that enhances the aesthetic performance of green roof systems
STRUCTURAL CONSTRAINTS, EXISTING BUILDING IMPACTS, AND LIMITED SPACE PRESENTED A DESIGN CHALLENGE. THIS WAS OVERCOME BY USING AN INTENSIVE SYSTEM WITH CONTINUOUS DRAINAGE, OFFERING FLEXIBILITY FOR BOTH GREEN AREAS AND PAVING

Intensive with shrub and paved on continuous drainage
The first Italian hotel of the German chain 25Hours was built in Florence and involved a relevant integration of architectural and landscape design. Paola Navone, the eclectic and ingenious designer, envisioned a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, and so the challenge was to create a wild, curious, stimulating landscape that envelops and designs the outdoor spaces but also the common areas of the receptive space.
There is a garage in the basement, and the green infrastructure was created on the roof of the garage with the resulting technical choices absolutely challenging. Therefore, the garden was created above a structural slab, above a reinforced concrete slab, and the result was possible thanks to the use of an intensive green roof system with reduced thicknesses but no less efficient.
An additional design constraint was a small space enclosed by a backdrop of walls of adjacent buildings that were not particularly aesthetic and qualifying.
Greenery was used to visually soften the impact of surrounding buildings, conceal parking lot vents, and create a spacious, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for hotel guests. Thanks to technological green roof systems, each room facing the garden enjoys its own garden space designed and furnished to create an environment protected by lush vegetation that conceals service spaces also necessary for maintenance. Thanks to the use of the continuous drainage technique, it has been possible to manage with great flexibility the areas destined for greenery and planting and the paved areas by totally concealing the presence of an impermeable slab.
