Galata Museo del Mare - Genova
A terrace with a green roof system can be seen from the exhibition spaces overlooking the city
THE GREEN ROOF SYSTEM IN THIS PROJECT HAS A DUAL ROLE: IN ADDITION TO DECORATIVE, THE EXTENSIVE ORNAMENTAL SYSTEM IS USED BY THE DESIGNERS AS A MEANS OF CONTROL; IT ALSO PREVENTS USERS FROM APPROACHING THE PARAPET

The Maritime Museum is located in a historic customs warehouse in Genoa’s dockyard. Historically it was used as an arsenal for the construction of galleys and later as a warehouse for goods in transit. Since 2004 it has been used as a museum boasting 200,000 visitors a year.
In 2018, work began on setting up a room on the fourth floor for the display of Fondazione Clerici paintings. The hall is connected to a large covered terrace overlooking the city.
The focus of the architectural design was to restore the potential of the place, so the large space of the terrace was preserved by freeing it from clutter and other superstructures. The rectangular-shaped terrace has a green roof system border anticipating a glass parapet.
The green roof system was used by the architects as a “perceptual” tool to communicate to the users that it is important not to reach the parapet.
In fact, staying at a distance from the parapet provides a better view of the city without being bothered by the noise of city traffic below the terrace.
