The new Lavazza headquarters is located on Via Bologna in Turin. The architectural design created by arch. Cino Zucchi is characterized by the function reserved for the garden-square, an area designed to be enjoyed by citizens as well. In fact, the piazza-garden is not a mere accessory space reserved for the company and its employees, but is a space that literally opens to the city and its citizens. The garden-square is animated by a principle of osmosis between the company and the city, and because of its conformation it can be considered a “green urban backdrop” to the city.
The square-garden-green space is the result of a joint project by arch. Zucchi with landscape architect Camilla Zanarotti. It is located above a basement garage and it is an open space with flowerbeds and paths with sinuous shapes, emphasized by large light granite benches sloping toward flush curbs that surround the green islands.
The light intensive green roof system for hedge and planter areas was used in the latter; the substrate stratigraphies in which the trees were planted vary from 40 to 100 cm.
To achieve strong autumn colors, a specific desire of the client, multiple varieties of maple trees were chosen. To complete the chromatic picture, the undergrowth is rich in flowering shrubs. The chromatic visual effect is remarkable, a credit to the attention to greenery during construction made possible by the creation of a specific tender for the installation and supply of the tree essences.
The terraces, on the upper floors of the building, also feature the sinuous shapes of large metal pools that house tall trees. The trees provide shade in the warm months while creating environments for recreation and gathering.
The green roof in this project was the element that best met the ecological and mental and physical well-being needs of the facility’s employees. In addition, there has been an ever-increasing use of the garden-square by the citizenry, who little by little have discovered the spaces provided by Lavazza.
